Sustainability

Bolivia

Our Company is focusing on a number of projects in health care and education which are designed to provide long term benefits to the community of Amayapampa and surrounding communities.

Education

For ten years, the salaries for six teachers at the Amayapampa School have been provided for by the previous owners of the project Vista Gold and now Republic.  The Amayapampa Junior School was in fact purpose built by the previous permit holder Vista Gold Corp.

One of the six teachers will soon be appointed by Republic to the role of Education Co-ordinator for the region to enable them to work with all the schools in the surrounding villages to improve education outcomes. A further two teachers are also to be soon provided to a school in one of the surrounding villages.

Republic is funding the construction of a toilet block and vastly improved sanitary infrastructure at the Amayapampa senior school.
Republic also provides resources for students such as books and pencils in the schools in the region.

Healthcare

Vista Gold Coro also built the Amayapampa health clinic, where a community nurse has been provided for the past ten years by the companies. There have been periods when this nurse was the only health care provider in the area.  The nearest hospital is an hour away in the regional city of Llallagua, via typical rural Bolivian roads. Currently the clinic has one doctor, three nurses (including Republic’s nurse) and four student nurses. This additional compliment is only because we employ 255 people and they pay their national health insurance.

With the village recently securing the new doctor, Republic is working closely with him.  The doctor recently carried out a census on the village of Amayapampa and the surrounding villages. The census shows that over 200 children under five live in the various villages.

The new doctor is a specialist in public health and has implemented a number of new health programmes. These health programs will focus on a number of health issues with the community, particularly maternal and child health including family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, nutrition and importantly the issue of mercury in the community.

The Future

Republic is currently discussing with a small number of NGOs partnership opportunities to help benefit the communities around Amayapampa.
